Richard Gray was the guest coach at the 3rd Annual “Dare to Barefoot” Clinic at Ski-Mazing Watersports School in Haliburton. Richard made at pit-stop at Ski-Mazing in Haliburton after attending the Barefoot Nationals held at Summerski in Ontario this summer. Richard has long been an advocate for the sport of barefooting for many years and is currently the Canadian National Barefoot Team Coach. He was voted “Coach of the Year” last year and offered his best instruction to our crew of barefooters at the clinic. Our group consisted of footers from novice to competitive level and you couldn’t have asked for a more ideal day! Glass calm water well in to the afternoon, sunny skies and good laughs. Richard enabled our newest footer James to achieve backwards barefooting even after only having had a few sessions on the water in front position. Richard attributes some of his early success to the Headzone coaching system. “A backwards footer can’t see what they are doing and to be able to offer instant correction with the speakers in that helmet, saves the skier a lot of unnecessary bad falls.” Mark Lucas learned long line back deeps at the clinic and he said he has trained with Scarpa and other champs in day clinics and he couldn’t believe how good he felt at the end of the day. He said it’s because he hardly ever had a fall, and that it’s because Richard could speak to me in the helmet while riding long line. Craig had struggled with perfecting his back toe hold and with Richard being his eyes he could help talk to him and refine his position with ease. Our footers weren’t as tired as you would think after our morning session but the feet were a little tender so we put on the shoe skis to protect our soles and worked on rotations for the rest of the day. A great day and good times had by all!
